NoDak in a Nutshell
North Dakota was an interesting state with lots of friendly people. It started off humid and ended up as a dry heat as we got ready to cross into Montana. I loved that the lake theme continued from Minnesota - lots of water by the roads which was eventually replaced with fields of yellow or purple flowers as we headed west. I also noticed that gizzards continued to be standard on restaurant menus along with hot dish (I.e. Casserole), and gems (tater tots). There was also a strange trend of double toilets in women's bathrooms - which I don't quite understand....
7/8 - Kathryn,ND to Napoleon,ND 100+ Miles
Highlights : 9 miles of tailwind and no rain!
7/9 - Napoleon, ND to Bismark, ND - 75 miles General Shelby - lots of trees!!
On the way to our destination, we stopped by the side of the road for an impromptu photo-shoot!
7/10 - Bismark, ND to Hebron, ND - 68 miles
Breakfast at Little Cottage Cafe where we helped ourselves to full breakfast and spilt one of their famous cinnamon roles for good measure. Oh, how I will miss these ginormous breakfasts when I am no longer biking a bazillion miles a day! Afterwards, we stopped for photo ops at Bob's Big Boy - I had never seen one in person:)
One of our rest stops, New Salem, was a cute town and home of the Middy River cafe - great food and the owner was hilarious!!
When we rolled into camp, it was mail drop night. I got a surprise package from Donna and her husband Jim! Package contained words of encouragement, yummy cookies, dried strawberries and energy bars. We gobbled up the strawberries first - they were delicious....and I worked through the rest of the package (with lots of help from others) over the next few days. Thank you so much for this unexpected surprise!!!! I will definitely be making those energy cookies again now that I have the recipe.
7/11 - Hebron,ND to Medora,ND - 82 miles
About an hour into our ride, we noted that our phones fell back an hour into mountain time.
We also stopped for the best pancakes ever at the wrangler cafe in Richardson, ND - they were half an inch thick - I would later find out that these were German style pancakes.
The highlight of this day was stopping at Teddy Roosevelt National Park to view the North Dakota portion of the Badlands. We were at the official start of the West!
Medora was a cool town that looked like the old west. We heard that somehow a corporation owned the town so that everything was connected.
Our camp site was lovely - just outside of town. I will say this many times...the pictures do not do it justice!!!
7/12- Medora,ND to Glendive, MT - 65 miles
Hooray for crossing into Montana! It is so hard to believe that we crossed into our thirteenth state. This would be our home for the next two weeks!
Also, dinosaurs were starting the be a theme...lots of dig sites in this part of the country.
Our campsite that night was amazing - Makoshika State Park. The full moon lit the night sky over our campsite.
