I will cover our three rest days in Minneapolis in a future post - so many great things happened and I just need time to collect my thoughts. So for now, let's fast forward....to 60 miles from Minneapolis,MN to Dalbo, MN
Leaving the dorms at U of M in the morning was interesting. We meandered along several bike paths to make our way out of the city - occasionally stopping for pics or to double check directions.
As usual Rob and Richard navigated. I always tell people that they are the reason that I do not get lost. Both are excellent navigators and I typically follow one or both to ensure I am on the right path.
When we rolled into Dalbo at the end of our ride, we stopped at a bar called the Dusty Eagle.
20 years ago, someone thought of a genius feature...mounted high on the wall behind the bar is a shot glass on a shelf. If you sink a dime - you get a free drink. The bartender collects the dimes that missed their target at the end of each night. While our group did not manage to win any fee drinks, I am certain that we left a hefty tip to be collected at the end of the night.
As we sat, we noticed a jar labelled Turkey Gizzards - that was also behind the bar. To be clear, I would not ever be able to go on 'Fear Factor' because I would be knocked out the first time I was asked to eat something gross. However, I did offer dimes for the shot glass game, a free beer and the purchase of a turkey gizzard if someone would eat one. Skylar and Drew agreed and the fun began....
Although Skylar was confident, Drew was not as sure, so he used lots of tobasco. As both sliced into the gizzards and started to eat, it turns out that those grey brown blobs taste like roast beef.... Skylar and Drew completed the dare and collected dimes and beers.
Note: This may have spawned future 'eat something weird for beer' dares out west. Rocky Mountain Oysters were suggested as a future delicacy...stay tuned!
After the Dusty Eagle, we headed to the Bicycle Bunk House in Dalbo. This place was INCREDIBLE. Lots of places to sleep...showers, bathroom and two amazing hosts - Donn and Sherry Olsen.
Donn started the bike bunk house after he learned that he was in the northern tier route - he wanted to host cyclists on their journey. He has always been especially welcoming to the Bike the US for MS group as Sherry has MS. Amazingly, she was able to find a drug that has worked for her....and her last exacerbation (flare up episode) was 13 years ago. Donn and Sherry were presented with an outstanding host award for always going above and beyond to host our group over the years.
I slept in the grain silo that night....very cool!!!
You slept in a grain silo? Awesome!! And I am so with you on the gross food eating...I had brave plans for The Amazing Race...but Rob or Ida needs to be my partner for eating challenge purposes :) Oh, plus the both of them can drive shift stick!
ReplyDeleteHa! I would have to defer to Ben for eating gross stuff and driving stick as well...:)
