....although I am still not completely sure how this happened, Eric and I took an alternate route through Oswego,NY and missed the first rest stop of the day. We did approximately the same mileage as the rest of the group and texted our route leaders so they would know that we would meet them at rest stop 2. We laughed about this later because neither one of us are known for our map skills. There were some pretty good grinders along the way and Oswego seemed like a cool town with lots of shops and restaurants. We heard that next year's route will go through Oswego...
That night, our group stayed at the Lighthouse in Sodus Point. It was a beautiful spot on the lush lawn overlooking Lake Ontario.
Rolling into town, there was a street party at the local fire department and the road leading to the lighthouse was dotted with marinas and houses...
As we unwound from the day and set up our tents, many visitors stopped by to ask questions and chat. What a fun town to stay in! It would have been good to stay an extra night just to hang out with the locals.
It has been a pretty common occurrence for folks to give donations on the spot while we are stopped at various locations. In this case, we talked to a couple from Naples, Florida who summer at Sodus Point. The wife's brother has had MS since 1972 and still works - by using a speech device to translate his words into typing. We chatted with them for quite a while and answered questions about the trip and where we were from. They also offered access to their home just up the road in case anyone needed anything...
Two older gentlemen stopped by during a walk of their 5 small dogs. We chatted and joked with them for awhile - they own a local bed and breakfast and they gave us the scoop on local spots and showed us some cool pictures of Lake Ontario with frozen ice dunes in the winter. My favorite part of their visit was when they and their dogs sang happy birthday to Mike - hilarious! They said if we called them at Christmas, the dogs would also do a version of Silent Night! Ron got video of this and I will share the link once he posts it.
That night, there was an awesome 80's cover band playing at Captain Jack's - which could be heard for miles...I fell asleep to Foreigner - ah memories!!!
