Pace Line...Pace Line....Flat Line
6.16 - Bowling Green, OH - 80
6.17 - Monroeville, INDIANA (Mail Drop) - 88
Before this trip, when I explained that we would travel East to West, EVERYONE warned me about headwinds. The last two days have been brutal...and there is so much more to come.
My goal for the summer is to be able ride in a pace line for all segments of the day and be able to maintain and lead a 16-20 mile pace...comfortably ...during headwinds!! I have a ways to go, but can feel myself getting stronger with each ride. I have enjoyed riding with different groups.
Also, many thanks to Caroline, our strongest rider, who is from Germany...for her riding tips!
We made some great stops during the past two days. The Donut Shop in Clyde was hilarious. It was a small town breakfast place where lots of local veterans congregate over coffee. They made wise cracks and gave each other (and us) a hard time...'did you know that cars were invented?', 'you guys are crazy to bike that far...' Anyway, I was immediately reminded of Grandpa Ellis taking me to the Woolworth counter to hang with his buddies and chat. One of the guys came out to show us the Donut Shop jacket for the annual golf tournament that the old boys play in. Each year the winner would sign the collar - he had won twice and was proud to pose for a photo with Bethany (from NY). Glad we made that stop.
On the way to Monroeville, we were treated to lunch by Three Brothers Restaurant - they just wanted to feed on our way. That rest stop lasted a particularly long time because it was sweltering outsides and the headwinds were pushing us around pretty aggressively throughout the day.
After that stop, we had to stop for a photo-op in one of the next towns...'the northern tier team was in Payne'...
....and then we passed into my birth state of Indiana...go Hoosiers!!!
I loved the bike hotel in Monroeville - lots of outlets and space to sprawl. They also had a kitchen and showers. - we were spoiled for sure! Many were also treated to packages from loved ones - as this was one of the 5 mail stops on our route
